The World Next Door, developed by Rose City Games, is an action-adventure game that can be described as a “visual novel lite”: with a split focus between the storytelling aspects and the unique battle system. The game is the first of 3 games to be released in the partnership of Rose City Games and VIZ Media, who announced their efforts to debut narrative-drive games back in 2018.

The story follows Jun, a teen rebel who has found herself trapped in a magical world full of magical beings. Through the help of magical runes and her friends, she must find a way home before the time runs out. The story aspect is something that the team has worked heavily on, with branching dialogue and reputation systems that affect the story and relationships with the various characters in the game.

Outside its compelling narrative, The World Next Door offers a unique battle system that hopes to keep players hooked. Similar to Tetris Attack, battles are played out in real-time as you try to match three or more of the same symbol to dish out an attack towards the enemy. Different symbols will have varying effects on your opponent, and with the ability to dodge oncoming attacks, there are ways to optimize both your offense and defense. For those who are looking to throw down with friends, the game will be adding in a 2-player local multiplayer mode in a free update after the initial release.

The World Next Door is slated to release on March 28th, 2019 for the PC and Nintendo Switch.
